Founded in 1974, the Urban Morphology Research Group (UMRG), in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, is the major centre in the United Kingdom for the study of the geographical aspects of urban form. The Group seeks to advance knowledge of urban areas through the study of their history and the agents and ideas involved in their creation and transformation.
Made up of teaching and research staff, honorary research fellows, research students and associate members, the Group offers a lively environment for both post-graduate and post-doctoral research.
There are two major subdivisions of the Group’s research. The first concerns the planning and development of the medieval and early modern town, especially using techniques of town-plan analysis. The second concerns the processes shaping the twentieth- and twenty-first century urban landscapes.
