The surface wetness of Sphagnum-dominated peat bogs may be climatically driven. We are currently investigating peat cores from Sürmene Ağaçbaşı Yaylası (a high altitude peat deposit) using testate amoebae analysis (a sensitive indicator of bog hydrology) in order to test the hypothesis that bog wetness is climatically driven and related to past climatic changes foe example the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) or the Little Ice Age (LIA).
